Story-A-Day #51: Dirty/Clean

DIRTY/CLEAN

The jubilation for a new year and a fresh start can be less celebratory when the world is so filthy. The new year is meant to be about new beginnings and fresh starts, however, when the things you see are covered in the dirt of the previous year, it van be hard to put things in context.

A fresh start would have been a week ago, when the city was covered in a downy blanket of pure, white snow. With two days of rain, the world was a much different place.

Jeff realized that the appearance of his neighborhood should have no bearing over his outlook for the coming year, but it was hard being optimistic.

Soon enough, the remaining snow would have melted away and the dirt would flush down the drains that lined the streets. The trees and flowers would blossom to life and the undeniable optimism of spring would be hard to ignore. For now though, the world was a filthy mess, a dirty depressing place whose negative implications were compounded by the twittering flutter of a headache that lingered from the night before.

Jeff had been determined to make a fresh start, but he would need some clean snow first.

As a snowboard instructor, it was all he could hope for. With the optimism of spring, he would be back to serving tables. This fresh start would not do.
